The main culprit behind Tuvalu's impending doom is rising sea levels. Due to global warming, the polar ice caps are melting at an alarming rate, causing the sea level to creep up steadily. Tuvalu's highest elevation is only about 4.5 meters above sea level. As a result, even a small increase in sea level can have catastrophic consequences. High tides and storm surges frequently flood large parts of the island, eroding the shorelines and destroying infrastructure. Many homes and agricultural lands have already been lost.

In an attempt to preserve its identity and culture, Tuvalu has taken an innovative step. In 2022, the country announced plans to create a digital version of itself in the "metaverse". This digital Tuvalu will serve as a virtual repository of the nation's history, traditions, and landscapes. Even if the physical island is completely submerged, the digital nation will continue to exist, allowing future generations to access and experience Tuvalu's rich heritage. However, this digital solution cannot replace the real country. Urgent global action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is still needed to save Tuvalu from becoming the world's first nation to be completely swallowed by the sea.
